Political Essay
4 page essay using the history of a movement or activist organization from the 1960s to think about a political movement or organization of the present day.
You can frame this essay in either of two modes:
- Quest for understanding: improve our grasp of the present day by reference to the past;
- Strategic thinking: offer recommendations for political organizers of the present day by reference to the past.
Your essay should draw on two distinct bodies of evidence: sources from the 1960s as well as details you’ve gathered from engaging with present-day activists. You can rely to some extent on authorities, whether historians or present-day commentators. But give serious thought to what YOU can add to the conversation, whether through first-hand experiences or by introducing a trove of 1960s documents. As noted in the prompt for the first essay, the evidence you encounter will determine what your essay can cover, so frame your research question in response to whatever sources you’re able to gather.
